Returning from London in Ginger's car Bertie is met by Ginger himself who wants him out of the vehicle right away because he wants to go to the registrar with Magnolia. He tells Bertie that the election debate ended in turmoil, people throwing eggs, tomatoes and even potatoes at him and refers him to Jeeves for the details. Having found Jeeves Bertie learns that after the opening speeches Ginger announced that he fully endorsed mrs. McCorkadale, urging his followers to vote for her, after which all hell broke loose, causing Florence to break off their engagement on the spot. Jeeves leaves to attend to a parlour maid who was stricken by a tomato and then Aunt Dahlia comes in, telling Bertie that Spode, having been hit in the eye by a potato, concluded that the Commons are no place for a Lord. He keeps his title to the relief of Madeline, with whom he went to London reunited. After Aunt Dahlia leaves to see Jeeves  mr Runkle comes in to remind Bertie that he will soon be in jail, a statement he repeats for Florence, who comes in to tell Bertie that she will marry him instead of Ginger but readily retracts her offer on hearing of Bertie's impending doom. Mr Runkle then says he will not press charges against Bertie if Aunt Dahlia will let Anatole leave to be employed by him, causing her to call him a blackmailer. Then Jeeves intervenes, informing those present that mr Runkle previously jumped bail in a real estate fraud case in the United States and escaped to Canada to avoid imprisonment. On hearing this Aunt Dahlia invites mr Runkle into her boudoir to settle what she calls a little matter of the money he ought to transfer to Tuppy.
