At Bingley's house Bertie is let in by a staunch butler the name of whom he later learns to be Bastable. When asked about the club book Bingley explains how he took it away from the Junior Ganymede club unnoticed, saying that he was planning to sell the information about Ginger Winship to mrs McCorkable on condition that the book would be returned to the club afterwards. Since he is not willing to part with the book Bertie leaves, Bingley asking him to tell Bastable not to let anyone in with the exception of Jeeves, whom he would like to speak to again. On returning to Aunt Dahlia she is disappointed with his lack of result and goes to see Bingley herself, but is denied access by the butler. Jeeves is called in for assistance and he succeeds in recapturing the book from Bingley after having drugged him while they were taking a drink. Aunt Dahlia is very relieved and feels that this is the time to get lucky with L.P. Runkle.
