At three p.m. the next day Vanessa shows up at the cottage, Bertie leaving for a stroll in the village and stopping by the post office for something to read when he meets Angelica Briscoe who seceretly whispers "Has he brought it yet?" to him just before her father, the Rev. Ambrose Briscoe, walks in. Musing about the meaning of her words Bertie returns to the cottage, where Jeeves tells him that he overheard an argument that took place between Vanessa and Orlo concerning the money Orlo has inherited from his uncle who was a business partner of mr. Cook, the latter refusing to hand over the sum to Orlo, thus making it impossible for him to marry his Vanessa. Vanessa wanted Orlo to purloin the cat that is keeping Potato Chip, mr. Cook's race horse, happy so that it's absence would mr  Cook to give up the money but Orlo refused, upon which both of them split up. Then Vanessa appears and tells Bertie that she will be his wife.
