Bertie goes back to the cottage to fetch his car, having done enough walking for the day. He tells Jeeves what has happened to him with mr Cook becoming unreasonably agitated at the thought that Bertie might be stealing his cat. Jeeves tells him that mr Briscoe and mr Cook, both race horse owners, are rivals in an upcoming racing contest at Bridmouth-on-Sea. Moreover an employee of mr Cook whom Jeeves met at the local pub has told him that PotatoChip, mr Cook's racing horse, has bonded with a stray cat to the point that he will not eat when it is not near him. Understanding now why mr Cook got upset at him picking up the cat Bertie drives to the Briscoes and has a pleasant lunch with them and Aunt Dahlia in the company of the Rev. Ambrose Briscoe, brother of Colonel Briscoe, and his attractive daughter Angelica. He does however not contribute much to the conversation, causing Aunt Dahlia to ask him for an explanation afterwards. On hearing the cat and horse story she gets pensive, concluding that Potato Chip's training would be ruined if the cat were not around.
