Going out to the Goose and Grasshopper at an early hour the next morning for breakfast after a fitful night's sleep Bertie meets Orlo Porter, who tells him that he is waiting for Vanessa to come pick him up in the Bentley of her father she is pinching the keys of so they can elope without the risk of him coming after them. He tells Bertie that he and Vanessa reconciled after he told her that she need not worry about marrying Bertie, and that he finally stood up to het father, and that they will get by on his salary plus a small inheritance from her aunt. He gives Bertie an explanatory letter he has written for mr Cook and asks him to deliver it, after which he leaves with his bride-to-be. Bertie decides to mail the letter instead and returns to his cottage to settle down and do a bit of reading when the door bursts open to admit mr Cook, accompanied by Major Plank.
