Finding him in the bar of the Goose and Grasshopper Bertie lightens Orlo's sombre mood by telling him that he has no intention of marrying Vanessa, and cheers him up even more through the advice to address mr Cook about his inheritance after the latter has concluded his dinner, when his mood would be appreciably better. On returning to his cottage Bertie gets a telephone call from Aunt Dahlia, who tells him that after she told the vicar, who is in search for funds to restore the church organ, to put his shirt on Simla because he was sure to win while the cat was missing. But the vicar told Jimmy Briscoe about this, whereupon Jimmy said he wanted no part of it and that the cat must be returned right away or he would strike Simla's nomination for the race. After Bertie reassures her that Billy Graham is already on his way to return it Billy shows up and says he will not do it because of the temper mr Cook showed when he entangled him from the tablecloth he found him wrapped up in. When Aunt Dahlia rings again and Bertie informs her of the situation she wants him to return the cat himself, to which he agrees.
