While telling Jeeves of his engagement to Vanessa and of his apprehensions concerning Orlo Porter the telephone rings and Jeeves goes to answer it. On returning he tells Bertie that it was Orlo but that he need not worry about threats from him any more because Jeeves has reminded him of the life insurance policy he has sold to Bertie during the protest demonstration in London. That being out of the way Jeeves also suggests that Orlo approach mr Cook about his inheritance just after the latter has enjoyed a good meal, then being more receptive to a solution. Bertie agrees and plans to to go to the Goose and Grasshopper to put the idea to Orlo. Jeeves leaves to look up his aunt who lives in the village and Bertie is confronted with Billy Graham, who tells him that he has indeed brought the cat back but that the animal followed him back. For another ten pounds he will return the cat again, to which Bertie grudgingly agrees. Then, after Billy has left, Vanessa Cook comes in.
