Vanessa tells him they will have a quiet wedding because her father dislikes Bertie, and when he asks her why she will not marry Orlo she says that she does not want to marry a man who will not stand up to her father. She tells Bertie to stop smoking and that she will make out a reading list for him  when Angelica Briscoe bursts in, asking "Has he brought it yet?", and bursting out again. Vanessa leaves, and while Bertie is contemplating his fate with his head buried in his hands Aunt Dahlia comes barging in, saying "Has he brought it yet?"
