A letter (Nov 2000) written by my Uncle, who lived alone (with assistance from nearby relatives) listed the adjustments he was making:
A “new” year old car with auto trans
Remodel bathroom with 30” door, wheelchair accessible shower and grab bars
Commercial carpet
Handrails in hall ,porch, and along walk to sidewalk.
Power lift recliner chair
Several grab bars
Lever door knobs
I've found that the following help:
Smart phone -- store photos of med list, notes from last doctors visit, etc.; track taking meds; use alarm, etc.
Night light -- Place a 25 watt equivalent LED bulb in a central fixture and leave it on all night or use a voice controlled lamp, as via Alexa. Especially critical if you have pets -- sleeping dogs are a trip hazard.
Sling pack, single strap, allows access storage by swinging the pack to the front without removing it-- include extra meds, small "candy bar" power pack (for phone), small first aid kit, Swiss Army knife (as "tinkerer" model) or multi-tool (substitute "travel legal" scissors if flying), water bottle, etc. Smaller "travel pack" is handy for daily use, Llarger "fly fishing" sling pack is good for travel -- room for a parka or down vest, added Velcro to hold cane. Bed height -- Approximately chair height, remove/replace the springs/foundation under your mattress. We used a wood slat unit from Ikea. Plywood or OSB on 2x3s will work. Lowes or Home Depot will cut the material to length. (photo)
Mattress -- Rather firm, to facilitate movement. As -- 2" of soft foam over 5" of extra firm foam. Memory foam may not work. (I use 3" of medium foam over 3" of firm foam from: Foambymail
Vehicle -- Smaller SUV or mini-van -- We have a Subaru Forester -- easy entry and exit, large windows - visibility, automatic transmission, multiple safety features etc. Make the transition while you are still comfortable driving a new vehicle.
Schedule -- as levodopa becomes more important, you may need to set alarms on your phone
Pill boxes -- Having pills pre-counted (by day, for a week) gives you a reference -- did you take your last C/L? When you are taking it 5x daily, it is easy to get distracted and lose track of what you did.
More to be added.
