Syllabus Policy Statement Examples:
Below are templates for AI Policy syllabus statements. Please feel free to use these statements, or a personal modification of these samples, to include in your course syllabus. An AI Policy statement within your course syllabus will help guide students in understanding what is expected in your course and how to best consider their use of the many AI tools available to them.
Embracing AI Tools
AI Writing tools such as ChatGPT are welcome in this class, provided that you cite when and how you use the tool.
AI is acceptable with attribution: Students who want to use AI technologies in this course, such as ChatGPT, may do so. In order to uphold our academic standards, students are required to reference any AI-generated content that they used in their work (this includes reference lists, in-text citations, and/or use of quotations). Academic dishonesty includes the unauthorized use of AI technology to create content.
AI is encouraged with certain tasks and with attribution: You can choose to use AI tools to help brainstorm assignments or projects or to revise existing work you have written. It is important to be aware that the material produced by these programs may lack accuracy, completeness, or could present other potential issues.
Use of AI tools, including ChatGPT, is permitted in this course for students who wish to use them. To be consistent with our scholarly values, students must cite any AI-generated material that informed their work and use quotation marks or other appropriate indicators of quoted material when appropriate. The university's policy on plagiarism still applies to any uncited or improperly cited use of work or submission of work as your own.
Limited Use of AI Tools
During our class, we may use AI tools such as ChatGPT. You will be informed as to when, where, and how these tools are permitted to be used, along with guidance for attribution. Any use outside of this permission constitutes a violation of the University's Academic Honestly Policy.
Students must obtain permission from me before using AI composition software (like ChatGPT) for any assignments in this course. Using these tools without the instructor's permission puts your academic integrity at risk.
In this course, students are permitted to use Generative AI tools such as ChatGPT for specific assignments, as designated by the instructor. Students must give credit and cite any AI-generated material according to [APA, MLA, etc.] rules, including in-text citations, quotations, and references.
Prohibit Use of AI Tools
The use of Automated Writing Tools, including ChatGPT and similar artificial intelligence (AI) tools, is strictly prohibited in this course, even when properly attributed.
AI tools are not permitted for any stage or phase of work in this class. If you use these tools, your actions would be considered academically dishonest and a violation of the University's Academic Honesty Policy.
All work submitted in this course must be your own. You may not engage in unauthorized collaboration or make use of ChatGPT or other AI composition software.
AI-generated submissions are not permitted and will be treated as plagiarism.
All written work submitted for this course must be completed by you, personally. Use of artificial intelligence (AI) to generate text is strictly prohibited. Submission of text generated by AI will be considered a violation of academic integrity, including AI-generated text that you have summarized or edited.
In this course, it is expected that all submitted work is produced by the students themselves, whether individually or collaboratively. Students must not seek the assistance of Generative AI Tools like ChatGPT. Use of a Generative AI Tool to complete an assignment constitutes academic dishonesty.
