There is this thing called vampire electricity, when you leave things plugged in even when they’re off/not using it they’re still using energy. The Department of Energy says that an average of 5%-8% of your energy bill is from vampires. Instead of unplugging everything all the time you can get power strips. Power strips can turn everything all the way off. There are different kinds, ones with motion sensors, some could be “always on” and the others on and off as you please, be able to control it with a master device and ones with timers. It can be really easy to save energy.
You don’t always have to turn on all the lights or turn on the air conditioning. Try to let as much natural light in as possible, open the curtains then you don’t need to turn all the lights on. Sometimes you can even open the door and leave the screen door closed to let more light in. These are very easy things for you to do.
First of all you need to be using the right kind of light bulbs. 60-watt light bulbs use 90% of their energy for heat and only 10% is actually used for light. LED light bulbs are better, 60 watt costs $900 per year but LED is only $180 per year. Now that you have the right bulbs you don’t want to use them when you don’t need to. When you leave the house make sure none of your lights are on or when you leave a room that you aren’t going back in too any time soon.
Cleaning out your refrigerator doesn’t just allow you to get rid of rotten and old food, it lets the cool air circulate in the refrigerator better keeping your food cooler without using as much energy.
