Devices: PC, iPad, iPhone, Nintendo, Xbox.
All devices above can connect to each other (thought with Nintendo and Xbox there are a few extra purchases involved). (With the PC, be careful since it can have several different editions of Minecraft. Make sure you buy/run the right version of Minecraft)
Overview:
Has less features than Java edition, but is easier to use and can be bought on iPads and iPhones. It is very simple to connect to other people on the same version.
"GOOD STARTER EDITION!"
Devices: PC, Mac computer, Nintendo(?).
All devices above can connect to each other when using a server/LAN world (thought with Nintendo, there are a few extra purchases involved).
Overview:
Was the first edition of Minecraft and has the most features. Sadly it is harder to connect with friends privately (not using public servers).
"MORE ADVANCED"
Devices: PC, Mac(?), iPad, iPhone.
All devices can connect
Overview:
VERY hard to get this edition without help from a school. Not very good for actually playing the game, it is more for school projects and not gameplay.
"MOSTLY FOR SCHOOL"

We recommend you get bedrock edition to start with, preferably on a PC or iPad (PC if you intend on getting other editions later on). You can get it on a Nintendo or Xbox, but it is harder to set up and can require additional subscriptions (Nintendo) or buying an extra app for an account (Xbox). (Note: Nintendo can play up to 4 people together on the same Nintendo without a subscription)
