A month and a half ago I created a tournament bracket over at called The Sexiest Female Comic Book Character Tournament. I put together the 64 sexiest female comic characters from Marvel, DC, Image, Wildstorm, and one or two others, and people round by round until they decide who the sexiest comic character was. Happily 1052 people voted for my tournament, and here are the results below, and you can see the complete tournament by following the link here.... -finished.php?id=3017

But the problem with those sorts of lists is that they tend to get really wrapped up in the presumptive male gaze and the assumption of a male readership. Basically, you end up with a bunch of sexist ideas about what men want women to be.

So we wondered, what would such a list look like if the male gaze was taken out of the equation? We gathered some of our queer female and non-binary writers to nominate, vote for, and write up our own list of the hottest female characters in comics, from a queer perspective.

I'm going to be honest. I didn't really know about Bobbi until Chelsea Cain's Mockingbird series. But that was more than enough. She's one of the coolest, cleverest, and utterly sexiest characters out there. She's the type of crush that you wish you could be. Her series ends with a threesome! She's the best! [TM]

Bluebird is the best thing that ever happened to Batman, bar none. She is Batman's best sidekick, and smarter than him. She's a technological genius with the coolest hair cut. A blue-haired bisexual vigilante with a big gun? How is she not everyone's crush? The only reason I don't ship her with everyone is because I ship her with me. She's undeniably the coolest thing to happen to comics in a long, long, long time. [TM]

Black Widow was considered one of the hottest women in the comic books even before Scarlet Johansson starred as her in the MCU. A very capable martial artist and master of espionage, Natasha Romanoff was trained to use her sexuality to extract information. She was literally trained to look hot!!

Witchblade comics will never be known for their sprawling stories or intricate character studies, but they are filled with enough cleavage to get any red-blooded male through the night. Never has one comic book character caused so much nervous sweating from the awkward fans who buy the series.

The biggest mistake that Hollywood made with the character is when they tried to place her in a much more modest costume for the Witchblade TV series. Fans turned their collective nose up at the show and continued to ogle Witchblade and all of her bare flesh in the comics.

Last issue, we looked at the steamy nice Jewish boys in comics; today, we are going to recognize the beautiful women. These ladies are hotter than a bowl of Matza ball soup. They will really get your dreidel spinning (I have no clue what that means).

If you dig tall women, Masada is for you. Stunning and strong, this Youngblood member has a few things going against her. One- she gets her powers from the souls of dead Jews which is just weird and creepy. Two- she was created by Rob Liefeld which means she stands en pointe and will have back problems by the age of 20, oy.

Psylocke possesses one of the most well-known and misunderstood backstories in all of comics. Not only did she first appear as a Caucasian woman who transformed into an Asian woman, but she also had her mind swapped, was given cybernetic eyes, and had an ever-evolving set of powers.

I am a family man first and foremost. Everything that I do is for my family. They keep me focused and moving forward. I grew up loving comics, this hasn't changed and on occasion, I wonder if my wife thinks I'll never grow up. I hope you enjoy your stay at comicbasics.com.

To emphasize how impractical many female comic book heroes' poses are, BuzzFeed had women try to recreate them. Before their attempts at channeling superheroes like Wonder Woman and Spider-Woman, many of the women said they were slightly nervous, but ready for the challenge. It turns out the task was quite difficult.

Many of the women echoed the sentiment that these female characters' bodies are impossible to replicate in real life. Some also pointed out how silly it is for these heroes to fight crime and save the world while also being hypersexualized, with one woman adding she'd rather see Spider-Woman in a "strength pose," not a "sex pose."

To further emphasize the video's message, BuzzFeed later Photoshopped the women's bodies to look exactly like the original comic book heroes. As one woman put it, she ended up not even "look[ing] human."
