In 1992, Lou Pearlman placed an ad in the Orlando Sentinel to compose a vocal group with a "New Kids on the Block" look with a "Boyz II Men Sound".[13] McLean, who was the first to audition for Pearlman in his living room, became the group's first member at age 14.[13] Between late 1992 and March 1993, Pearlman held open casting calls and hundreds of young performers auditioned at his blimp hangar in Kissimmee.[14][13] Ultimately, Carter age 12 & Dorough age 19 along with two other members Sam Licata age 21 (later performing as Phoenix Stone) & Burk Parsons age 16 were selected after meeting Pearlman's expectations. An alternate member Damon was also chosen just in case one of the main five members' dedication to the group changed. Helping him in the process of choosing the members was Gloria Sicoli, Jeanne Tanzy, & Sybil Hall, along with help from Denise McLean AJ's mother. The boys would get together at Lou's blimp hangar or his home to practice, receive singing lessons, & hang out. They also went out everywhere together to bond & often went out to the best restaurants on Lou's tab. It seemed everything was going great but egos, parents & contracts derailed the very first lineup before even taking off. The first sign of problems arose when Damon was unhappy that he wasn't chosen as a main member & couldn't take part in a performance so after talks between him, his mother & Pearlman it was decided he would leave. Burk Parsons would be the next departure, due to conflicted feelings between having a calling to serve God or be in a boy band and entertain. He chose to follow God because he wasn't really into the scene & his mother's frequent blowups with Pearlman were a factor. He decided to leave shortly after they were named the Backstreet Boys but a week before the boys officially signed with Pearlman & Transcontinental. Charles Edwards age 20, a classmate of Howie's at Valencia Community College in Orlando who sang in the choir with him, took Burk's place in February 1993 after Howie suggested he audition for the rest of the guys & it seemed things were on track as they officially signed as Backstreet Boys with Pearlman with Nick, AJ, Howie, Charles & Sam. Lou, who was in collaboration with some writers & producers, got friends Bob Curiano & Tim Coons to work with them as they recorded some early demos and they started performing at local places in Orlando. Problems arose as they felt Charles Edwards would not work out long-term due to issues with his vocals not blending right with the other guys, & problems with him staying on key & dancing not on par with the other four boys, plus some personality & creative differences. It was decided he had to be let go & the other boys were sad to do so. Howie was told to talk to him as well as others including Lou, Jeanne & Julien Bensher who was one of Lou's business partners in the label. Bob Fischetti, Frank Sicoli, & Frankie Vasquez were the other partners. In March 1993 after seeing & talking to Kevin Richardson at a nightclub Frank Sicoli's wife Gloria asked him if he was interested in joining a new group in Orlando that was being put together by her husband's business partner Lou Pearlman & told him things weren't working out with Charles. It piqued Kevin's interest & she along with Lou's limo driver would bring Richardson up to Pearlman and after meeting with him he liked Richardson & played the group's demo recordings & showed pictures of the group. Not long after, he was invited to see them perform at a club. The first time he saw the boys was when they performed as a foursome with Nick, AJ, Howie & Sam in a local nightclub & his first impression of them were that they were kind of young but were very talented. He met the guys & they clicked & he Richardson age 21 same as Licata joined the group. The nightclub performance however showed some problems between the rest of the group & Licata as he did not want the group to perform a song he wrote Save The World. After tensions arose, Lou eased them by telling them about Richardson. Lou talked to Sam about being a team player, so he stayed for a while & the lineup became Nick, AJ, Howie, Kevin & Sam but his heart was into his solo career and after a rehearsal in early April 1993 during a ride to the group's band house Licata decided to let the guys know he wanted to really go solo & felt the group wasn't going anywhere, so left the group making them a quartet. After hearing other candidates & not being satisfied, Richardson suggested his cousin Brian Littrell & seeing no possible replacement for Licata in sight, that's when Kevin was given the go ahead to call his cousin. Littrell flew from Kentucky to Orlando to formally join the group on April 20, 1993, a day after receiving a phone call from Richardson about it. Thus, April 20 became their anniversary date & the final five members of the group was formed[15] Pearlman decided to call them Backstreet Boys, after Orlando's Backstreet Market, an outdoor flea market near International Drive which was also a teen hangout.[13][16]
