5th Grade Reading/ Language Arts
Class overview
The overall goal is to work together to grow as a confident reader. We will analyze various genres of text while continuing to expand our speaking, grammar, spelling, and writing skills.
STAAR Redesign Assessment
Beginning this school year, students will be taking a state test with somewhat of a different and more rigorous look. Do not be alarmed, as this assessment is meant to be more aligned with the actual classroom experience, while testing students in ways they have all ready been using in the classroom. Yes, it will be more challenging, but it will further help us educators be informed of the areas your child my need additional instruction, so they can close the gap to be more on level with their peers.
Here is a great novel series we read during our Read Aloud time during the year. In what began as just reading "Among the Hidden", turned to students constantly begging for more.
Shadow Children Series
To be a third child is to be in constant danger. Imagine a world where families are allowed only two children. In this Dystopian series by Margaret Peterson Haddix, shadow children must stay in hiding. If discovered, the punishment is DEATH!!!

About me
I have been an educator for 18 years, while teaching in three school districts. It has been a pleasure and a blessing to be able to watch young kids grow academically. The last 17 years I have taught Reading/Language Arts to fifth and sixth graders. From novel studies through our read-alouds to guided reading at different levels, my students are exposed to a range of genres at a variety of levels. I am excited to continue to help students grow to be better readers and writers.
