In New York State, English Language Learners (ELLs) take two tests. They take the NYSITELL when they first begin school in New York State and they take the NYSESLAT every spring.

Students take the NYSESLAT every spring. There are five levels of achievement on the NYSESLAT. A student's level determines the ENL services that they get the following school year.
