Week 10/4/23 First meeting of the year! We discussed what plants we can plant this spring and what can be planted this fall. We also talked about what can't be planted due to climate, and small space. Plan to head out to the garden next week for some clean up and weeding.
Week of 8/26/19: This week we harvested cucumbers, tomatoes, and green beans. We also dehydrated parsley and made bruschetta! Another donation was made to the food cupboard.
Week of 8/19/19: Lots of harvesting this week! Our tomatoes are ripening, cucumbers are reaching full size, and our pole beans seemed to grow overnight. We made fresh salsa from our harvest. We also donated nineteen pounds of produce to the food cupboard.
Week of 8/12/19: Our garden is doing well! We are starting to get some tomatoes ripening, our pole beans are coming in, the lettuce is still thriving in spite of the heat, and we have tons of cucumbers! We made a nice donation to the food cupboard.
Week of 8/5/19: Things are really growing! So many green tomatoes - can't wait for them to ripen! We needed to tie up more tomato plants, and we dehydrated more oregano. Finally getting blossoms on our pole beans, so our beans will take off soon. We made another donation to the food cupboard. We also used some of our cucumbers and onions to make refrigerator pickles - they are tasty!
Week of 7/22/19: We watered and weeded, but we also added another tier to our cucumber trellis, and harvested some radishes, oregano, and zucchini. We put our oregano into the food dehydrator, and we used the zucchini to make martian cookies! They were tasty!
Week of 7/15/19: Our mid-week session was rained out (no need to water!), but we were very busy at our other session! We watered and weeded, then trellised our cucumbers, finished our teepee trellis for the pole beans, and trimmed back our herbs. We also harvested garlic scapes and basil to make pesto, and we used the pesto to make pizza - yum!
Week of 7/1/19: Thanks to all who helped us this week - we were busy! Lots of watering and weeding, tying up tomato plants, and getting our trellis ready for our pole beans. We also made strawberry-rhubarb hand pies - yum! Things are growing nicely!
Week of 6/24/19: It was great to get back to the garden! We watered, weeded, and planted parsley and jalapeno peppers. We also harvested some rhubarb and made strawberry-rhubarb sauce - it was delicious! (Check our Farm-to-Table Recipes on this site for this recipe and many more!)
Week of 6/10/19: Our last session for the 2018-2019 school year was a busy one...we did weeding and prepped the last raised bed. We planted cucumbers, green beans, spinach, lettuce, and radishes. We also put in stakes for the cucumbers and a teepee trellis for the green beans. We thinned out our zucchini and yellow squash plants. Thanks to Mr. Ken Wasnock of Harris Seeds for seed donations! We are off to a great start!
From mid-May through the week of 6/3/19: We started our tenth growing season with a lot of excitement - due to a lumber donation from CountryMax and Mr. Mark Selvek's talented tech classes, we now have six brand new raised beds...and they are beautiful! They also designed and installed a sign for our garden which recognizes our main donors. Our buildings and grounds people provided new wood chips for our paths around the raised beds so we can even garden in muddy conditions. It looks so nice out there!
We started our "flash-mob garden sessions" in May. After weeding and prepping the raised beds we planted three kinds of tomatoes, peppers, zucchini, yellow squash, basil, cilantro, chives, red onions and yellow onions. Thank you to Mr. Chip White of White's Farm Market for advice and the donation of seeds and seedlings, and thanks to Mrs. Karen Harrison for onion donations.
