From the UC San Diego Infographic Description: "Sources are published first as primary sources about a topic. Then secondary sources are written using primary sources as references. Primary and secondary sources are compiled into tertiary sources. However, in research, we often start with tertiary sources to get an overview of a topic and then review secondary sources because of their interpretation. Often primary sources are examined last."
