Verona High School

Summer 2020 Theme

Dear Parent(s) / Guardian(s):

I do hope that this letter finds you and your family safe and well during this difficult time. I am reaching out today to discuss what the Verona High School summer reading initiative will look like this year given our extended school closure through the end of this academic year. In the past, we have had our summer reading aligned to an annual, overarching theme and then students had some choice in picking a book from a limited number of predetermined titles. This year, we believe independent reading in all non-AP courses, whereby students have free choice to read a book that interests them, is the most appropriate course of action. At this time, becoming engrossed in a good book that genuinely excites us might be precisely the welcome diversion that some of us need.

At this time, we would like to make the book inventory of the VHS library available to as many students as possible. To sign up for a book of choice, all students entering grades 9 through 12 will be asked to complete this Google form that will be posted in their English class’s Google Classroom, on the VHS Library’s website and will be discussed with students during video conference lessons in their respective English classes. Please be advised that any books acquired through the VHS Library need to be signed out by May 20, 2020. We apologize for this compressed time frame but this is necessary due to the imminent start of our district-wide school construction project. If you choose a book from the VHS Library, we will provide curbside pick-up days in front of the school while adhering to all recommended safety guidelines. If you choose home delivery of your chosen book(s), we will drop it off, practicing physical distancing as well. This choice can be made on the aforementioned Google sign-up form.

Alternatively, families may still opt at this time to support local bookstores that offer telephone orders and curbside pickup. We are also seeking to partner with the Verona Public Library so that your children have access to a print and digital inventory that can supplement what the Verona High School library has to offer. When this information is received, it will be shared with everyone in a future communication. Currently, a list of free ebook sites can also be found on the VHS Summer Reading site.

The VHS Summer Reading site also shares information about the summer reading assessment.

Students will be asked to complete this Pre-Reading Reflection form by June 12th. During the summer, enjoy your book. Book annotations are suggested, as these will help you participate in a meaningful conversation about these books when the school year begins. Once the book is finished, students are asked to complete this Post - Reading Reflection form by Friday, September 19th.

While there is no doubt that we are all navigating challenging terrain at present, we hope that reading continues to be a positive outlet whose practice can help engage our young people during the summer months, increase their enjoyment as they read for pleasure and lower stress & anxiety levels by getting lost in a good book. Should you have any questions pertaining to the reservation and distribution of a book for your child, please do not hesitate to contact me at or text or call Mrs. Elissa Malespina, our media center specialist, at 862-231-3790. I wish all of you safety and good health as we continue to work our way through our current public health crisis.
