The Opportunity School

A program (during FIRE) to combat punitive punishment against students and use peer to peer dynamics to teach life skills and build resources.

WE Club on campus initiated a program during FIRE to combat the school to prison pipeline in our community. This program will take place at The Opportunity School, a school dedicated to students that have been expelled or suspended from their middle schools. We have discovered through their stories that many have faced great hardships and instead of receiving support, these students have been punished. Employing restorative justice methods, our intentions are to teach these students practical life skills and expand their exposure to career options. We aim to develop trust with the students and as high school students we want to offer our skills as mentors. We have the power to reshape the paths of these students, motivate them, and fuel new passions.
