Course Description
English 12 is designed for students to explore the definition of success and make self-discoveries on the forward trajectories of their lives, high school and beyond. All four quarters will be Common Core based English course for 12th graders at FTHS that teaches students essential strategies for expository and prose writing along with analysis strategies for appreciation of classic and contemporary literature and nonfiction texts. English 12 CP moves at an academically stringent pace, with a blend of reading assigned as homework, journal and essay writing, project based learning, and student centered discussion during class.
This course is divided into four thematic units. During each unit you will study key texts, learn and practice vital writing and reading skills, develop a more sophisticated vocabulary, study and implement diverse writing styles, and learn to analyze and evaluate without judging.
Throughout this course you will be expected to read actively, deliberately, and thoroughly. You will be expected to respond to literature in a number of ways and you will be asked to analyze your own work, the work of your peers, and the work of the chosen authors.
You will be expected to write in different ways this year, this includes; writing to understand, writing to explain, writing to evaluate, and writing to analyze.
You will write several timed in class essays per quarter. In addition, there will be 1-2 formal, MLA format, literary analysis essays per quarter. The exception being Quarter 4 when you will write a research paper and present your Dragon Talk. Although homework assignments will vary, reading will make up the majority of the homework in this class.
