Asian American Pacific Islander Heritage Month

Welcome to Asian American Pacific Islander History Month!

Whereas the Library of Congress months and days can be tokenizing, we believe that when taught in conjunction with ongoing and continuous integration of Ethnic and Social Justice Studies and culturally sustaining pedagogy, events such as Asian -American Pacific Islander Heritage Month can be used to illuminate the unique histories of people from the Asian-American Pacific Islander communities and the important contributions they have made and continue to make to our society and to the world. We hope this website provides valuable resources for students, families and educators to learn more about and celebrate Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders.

Message from our Superintendent, Dr. Roger Rice:

As the nation deals with the tragic events that unfolded in Atlanta..., that took eight lives, six of whom were Asian American women, we feel it is appropriate for the Ventura Unified School District to express our deepest sympathies for the victims’ family and the Asian American and Pacific Islander community. It is equally appropriate that we reaffirm our commitment to racial and social justice and to support our students in finding their voices and expressing themselves.

The Ventura Unified School District deeply values each of our students and their families. We know that many families may be feeling overwhelmed with the challenges of the pandemic and the unsettling times that have become much more challenging this past year. We remain hopeful that action and agency, as well as supporting our students, will move us forward. As we move forward together, if you have suggestions on how we can promote ethnic and social justice in VUSD, please email us at GreatIdeas@venturausd.org . This information will be forwarded to those that continue our work in this area.

Our school community of teachers, counselors, leaders, and staff are here to help. Please know you are not alone...If your student would benefit from talking to a counselor, please contact the school or Student Support Services at 805-641-5000 for assistance. We are Ventura strong and resilient. We will work together to support our students and families.

Welcome!

The goal of this website is to collect and share resources for families, students, and educators in response to our continued efforts to nurture diversity, equity and inclusion in our district and community. We hope these resources will be helpful in guiding important and difficult conversations about sexism, racism and social inequities, as well as nurturing culturally sustaining practices and celebrating people who are Asian American and Pacific Islander in our society. This site is a living document, and we will strive to continuously update it. If you have a concern, a suggestion, or a resource you'd like to share, please email GreatIdeas@venturausd.org or go to the Contact page. Thank you for your support, and we are honored to be learning alongside you as we engage in this crucial work.
