Celebrating Contributions of Black Folks/African Americans
2026 Theme: A Century of Black Commemorations
The 2026 Black History Month theme, chosen by ASALH, is "A Century of Black History Commemorations," marking 100 years since the first Black History Week in 1926, with the Smithsonian's National Museum of African American History and Culture (NMAAHC) and other institutions hosting events to honor this milestone and Black contributions to labor and culture. The theme highlights 100 years of celebrating Black history, inspiring events, resources, and new exhibits like "At the Vanguard: Making and Saving History at HBCUs" at NMAAHC, according to Smithsonian.
Celebrate Black History Month with Smithsonian events, resources, exhibitions, and podcasts. The 2025 theme is "African Americans and Labor" with a focus on the various and profound ways that work of all kinds intersects with the collective experiences of Black people.
The Smithsonian is celebrating African Americans and the Arts! The collaboration between the Museum of African American History and Culture and the National Museum of African Art invites you to explore a myriad of artifacts, from African American Art such as the painting by Mickalene Thomas (pictured right) to the music of Run DMC and the history of Hip Hop and Rap. Resources from the Smithsonian include a symposium, live virtual events, keynote speakers, and virtual panelists. To learn more visit at African Americans and the Arts.
