Welcome to Coach Proclivo's Class

Valley Center Elementary 4th & 5th Grade P.E.

Welcome back to school after what was a fun and relaxing summer! In Valley Center, all 4th and 5th graders attend a daily PE class taught by a credentialed PE teacher. Our P.E. classes provide a fun & exciting environment focused on social skills and character building. In P.E. students participate in a number of sports and fitness related activities, while building a foundation of healthy living. Let’s have a great year!

Sports Units

Our year is split into month long units that concentrate on particular sports. In each unit, students learn the skills associated with the sport, practice the skills, play the games for a few weeks and end with a test of the skills for that sport. Our units include Dropkick Kickball, Ultimate Soccer, Dance, Basketball, Handball, Zooball, Rugby, Teamball & More.

Fitness Fun Days

One day each week, we have a Fitness Fun Day where students work on fitness related activities in a game format. These fun games include: Sharks & Minnows, Team Ball, Wall Ball, Popcorn, Capture the Flag, and many others!

Running Program

Students run or walk everyday in our class to build up cardiovascular endurance. We begin with walking activities at the beginning of the year then build up our running as the year goes on. The end of the year test is a 3/4 mile for 4th grade & 1 Mile for 5th grade (students in each grade level will never run longer than that final distance).

Medical Excuse Policy: Illnesses & injuries happen all the time and so parents/guardians can excuse their child for 1-3 days with a note, but for anything needing a longer time out of PE, a doctor’s note is required. Students with asthma or other long-term medical conditions should notify us so that modifications can be made for them.

The Rule of 85 : We follow the Rule of 85, which means if the outside temp is over 85 degrees, our students will not run that day. In cases of extreme heat or rain, class will be held indoors.

Grading: PE students are given standards based grades each trimester based on their performance:

1) Timed Running Tests

2) Fitness Tests

3) Sport Skills Tests

3) Daily effort, participation & citizenship

Water Bottles and Shoes: It is recommended that students bring a water bottle (refillable bottles are best) to class so they can stay hydrated. Students need to wear shoes in PE that will protect their feet from injury. Sandals, flip-flops, and open-toed shoes should not be worn. If your child wants to wear those shoes to school, please have them bring an extra pair of ‘PE appropriate’ shoes to change into.
