Biography
Mr. Jeffrey Yarush grew up in the Valley Center School system, participating in the various school bands, choirs, and musical theatre productions present in the community. Being the son of a teacher himself, Mr. Yarush has always felt comfortable in the classroom. Upon graduating VCHS, he has since earned his Bachelor's Degree in Literature and Writing Studies with a supplemental focus in Theatre Arts at CSUSM. He has participated in over 60 theatrical productions as an actor, a director, or a lighting designer. He believes that learning and understanding stories are an important part of society and that studying literature and theater are excellent methods of finding one's own identity as well as empathizing with that of others.

In an English class, the baseline is literature and writing, reading stories, and recording our thoughts. This can be done in so many different ways, though. There are many mediums in which we can receive stories, and, especially at the middle school age, it is important for students to feel connected to the stories in front of them. A lot of the Maker Education can come in how they record their thoughts. Basic forms of writing include expository, argumentative, and narrative, but there are many different avenues they could use to express their thoughts on a topic. Students could act out a courtroom drama to argue different literary cases. They could create videos or animations to review the important parts of a story. They can create comics and models for their own narratives. It is a teacher's job to teach, but also to provide the tools in which to learn by teaching lessons that will spark something inside of them and light the creative flame within. I plan to use different mediums in which students will receive and tell stories, to help them enjoy literature and writing, and to encourage them to discover their true identities.
