Who 4th and 5th Grade Student Teams
4th and 5th grade students in schools throughout Ventura County are invited to participate in a mathematics competition event that is exciting and challenging. Each school may use a screening process of its own design in order to select four students from each grade level (4th and 5th) who will best represent the school at the Ventura County Mathlete Challenge.
Competition Format
25 questions in 25 minutes with no calculators. Each question is worth 1 point.
Section I is multiple choice. The key is computational fluency and the expectation that the average student may not be able to finish all 25 problems in 25 minutes. Answer choices are A, B, C, D.
5 questions in 30 minutes with calculators. Each question is worth 5 points. Section II is free response problem solving problems. These word problems are similar but slightly easier than the team test problems. Students are graded only on the answer, with full or no credit given.
5 questions in 30 minutes with calculators. Each question is 20 points each. This section is free response problem solving problems that all 4 teammates work on. Each team decides how to divide up the problems or to work on them all together. One answer sheet is collect at the end. The focus is on non-routine problems and teamwork.
Awards
The individual awards will be for the top individual scores from adding together the two individual tests. Each test is worth 25 points for a total of 50 points. Grade level awards will calculated by adding together the two individual tests (25+25) for each of the 4 participants from a school and the team test of 100 points. Each of the three sections will be worth 1/3 of the grade level teams overall score. School level awards will be calculated by adding together the 4th, 5th, and 6th grade team scores.
