Students need to develop reading stamina, the ability to read independently for longer periods of time. As 2nd graders, some students may be ready to read chapter books and read for a longer time. Still many of them cannot read very long books so they may have to read several shorter books .
This is okay. In fact, it's wonderful! Re-reading a favorite book helps children become better readers. They will read more smoothly and begin to sound like a big kid reader, adding emphasis and expression.
Lastly, remember to read to your child. They need to hear what good reading aloud sounds like from you, too. Sharing books that you loved as a child and new favorites you find together at the library will become cherished childhood memories for your sons and daughters.
