The Page Turners
The Page Turners: Empowering Gifted Minds For Holistic Development Through Bibliotherapy Units is a workshop catered to Grade 2-5 gifted learners and their families. Aligned with the five key competencies of the Social Emotional Learning (SEL) framework to support the VBCPS Graduate Profile, the four bibliotherapy units focus on the holistic development of gifted learners by providing an immersive and comprehensive approach to addressing their academic, social, and emotional needs. By delving into age-appropriate novels featuring gifted characters, participants gain insights into the advantages and limitations of their giftedness; therefore, fostering their self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, relationship skills, and responsible decision-making abilities.
Competency #1: Aligning with the Balanced attribute of the VBCPS Graduate Profile, the program fosters self-awareness by featuring novels with gifted characters who also face advantages and limitations. This allows students to reflect on their own strengths and challenges, promoting a deeper understanding of their own abilities and needs. The activities and discussions provided encourage students to articulate their thoughts and engage in meaningful self-reflection.
Competency #2: Aligning with the Personally and Socially Responsible attributes of the VBCPS Graduate Profile, the program supports self-management skills by providing collaborative activities that require students to manage their time, follow instructions, and work together with their parents. Students will learn to set goals, regulate their emotions, and take responsibility for their learning.
Competency #3: Aligning with the Thinkers and Inquirers attribute of the VBCPS Graduate Profile, the program promotes social awareness by exploring and analyzing complex themes, which encourages students to develop a deeper understanding of real-world issues and are encouraged to consider multiple perspectives. This fosters empathy and an appreciation for diversity.
Competency #4: Aligning with the Communicators and Collaborators attribute of the VBCPS Graduate Profile, the program cultivates relationship skills by engaging students and their parents in discussions and activities. By working together, students and parents strengthen their bond and develop effective communication and collaboration skills. This prepares students for positive and healthy relationships both within and outside the classroom.
Competency #5: Aligning with the Problem Solvers and Value Creators attribute of the VBCPS Graduate Profile, the program supports responsible decision-making by presenting students with real-world problem-solving opportunities. With the closure challenges, students are encouraged to think critically, evaluate options, consider consequences, and propose solutions that align with their own values and strengths.
By providing a comprehensive and stimulating curriculum, The Page Turners program nurtures the creativity, empathy, and problem-solving skills of gifted learners while fostering stronger connections between gifted students and their parents.
