Students in the IB Programme take a variety of courses in each subject area. We want our students to have a balanced approach to education, while also allowing them to narrow their focus in Grades 11 and 12 to specific content areas of interest.
The Benefits of IB Courses
IB students don’t just specialize in one subject—they take courses from each major area: language and literature, world languages, individuals and societies, sciences, mathematics, and the arts (or an elective). This balanced approach ensures that students grow as well-rounded learners with strong skills in reading, writing, research, problem-solving, and collaboration. Beyond academics, IB courses emphasize critical thinking, global awareness, and real-world application—benefits that prepare students not only for college, but for lifelong success.
IB vs. AP vs. Dual Enrollment
Families often wonder how the International Baccalaureate (IB) compares to Advanced Placement (AP) and Dual Enrollment. While all three options provide college-level learning in high school, there are important differences:
IB (International Baccalaureate): A comprehensive program where students take courses across all subject areas, complete the IB Core (Extended Essay, Theory of Knowledge, and CAS), and sit for international exams. The program emphasizes global awareness, critical thinking, and connections across subjects. Colleges worldwide recognize and value the IB Diploma.
AP (Advanced Placement): Students choose individual AP courses based on their interests and strengths. Each course ends with a standardized AP exam. AP provides flexibility, and success can earn college credit depending on exam scores and university policies.
Dual Enrollment: Students take college-level courses through a partner college or university while still in high school. These classes may count for both high school and college credit, though transfer policies vary by institution.
Each pathway offers strong preparation for college, but IB provides a uniquely structured, globally recognized diploma program that develops the whole student.
