Welcome to First Grade!

Welcome to first grade at Indian Lakes! We are excited about the new school year and we are looking forward to working with you and your child. We would like to take this opportunity to address a few important topics.

DAILY COMMUNICATION (YELLOW) FOLDER:

All students at ILES will be using the yellow communication folders to bring home important papers and parent notices. This is a good place to put any notes or dismissal changes. Every first grader will bring his/her yellow folder home each day and return it the following day. Your child's yellow folder will contain a behavior calendar. Please review and initial this nightly. The behavior calendars should stay in the folders but please remove all other papers each night.

HOME ACTIVITIES:

Homework will be assigned Monday - Thursday. Please have your child read or be read to each night.

ATTENDANCE:

There is a School Board policy regarding truancy. Whenever your child is absent, please send in a note explaining the reason for the absence to assure the absence is recorded as an excused absence.

SPECIAL CLASSES:

P.E. and recess will take place every day. Remember to have your child wear/bring tennis shoes and girls in dresses or skirts should wear shorts underneath.

STUDENT HANDBOOK:

The First Grade Curriculum Handbook is available online. Please read through the student handbook and save it for reference throughout the year.

TEACHER COMMUNICATION:

An excellent way to pass any information to your child's teacher is to send a note in the yellow communication folder. If you have any questions or concerns at any time during the year, you may also contact your child's teacher by calling the school office and leaving a message on her voicemail, or by sending an e-mail. Please do not leave a voicemail message to change the way your child will be going home. You must send a dated note or an e-mail to notify us of any transportation changes.

PTA:

Please be sure to join the PTA. The cost is $5.00 per member. The PTA supports our students in many ways.

BREAKFAST/LUNCH:

The cost of breakfast is $1.40. If your child is purchasing breakfast, he/she will pick breakfast up at the cafeteria, then bring it to their classroom to eat. The cost of lunch is $2.85. VBCPS offers parents the opportunity to make meal payments online. This online service allows you to prepay so that money is directly deposited into your child’s account. You can also monitor your child’s food purchases, set up low-balance email reminders, and schedule recurring payments.
