In this experiment, you'll set up a $900 watershed model to demonstrate the effects of water runoff into streams, lakes, and bays. In grades that study watersheds, pollution, and erosion, you'll have the option to teach your class using this kit.
Materials:
Enviroscape Watershed Model Kit
"Pollutants"
Fertilizer
Insecticide
Animal Waste
Oil
Industrial Waste
Trash
Soap
Rain (Mist Bottle)
Instructions:
Set up the watershed model kit to simulate a neighborhood, farm, golf course, industrial area, construction site, water treatment plant, streams, rivers, and a lake/bay. The kit has houses, cars, bridges, tractors, construction equipment, farm buildings, industrial buildings, trees, grass, and animals.
Pour about 1 cup of water in the lake/bay.
Place various pollutants in the areas where they are most likely to occur
Fertilizer on the farm, in neighborhood yards, and on the golf course.
Animal waste on the farm, in the forest, on the golf course, and in the neighborhood.
Insecticide on the farm, golf course, industrial area, and neighborhood.
Industrial waste and oil at the industrial and construction sites.
Soap in the neighborhood to simulate people washing their cars.
Trash in various areas around the environment.
Make it rain. Use the spray bottle to thoroughly mist the entire environment.
Reflection:
What happens as the rainwater flows from each of the areas of our environment?
How does this relate to the watershed in Virginia Beach? (Hint: Did you know there's a stream on the Ocean Lakes ES school grounds that drains into Back Bay?)
