Language Arts

The main focus in reading at the beginning of the year is identifying the characters and setting, making predictions, and making connections.

Retelling a text is a major emphasis in first grade. Students are expected to provide the characters, setting, and problem for the beginning of a story; four main events for the middle of a story; and the solution for the end of the story.

We integrate Science and Social Studies concepts into our language arts block through nonfiction skills.

Students will begin to generate their own ideas for writing and writing independently. Students need to capitalize all names, the letter I, and the first letter of a sentence. Students need punctuation at the end of their sentence. Students need to work on spelling their words phonetically (including all sounds) and spelling commonly used sight words correctly. We practice using the word wall to help us write.

We begin the year reviewing letter sounds and focus on short vowel sounds.

Math

We are beginning the year off by counting to 120, starting from any number.

Students will also work on counting backwards from 30 to 0.

Throughout the first nine weeks, students will work on addition and subtraction facts through 0-5. These will be incorporated into math talks, number talks, small groups, and math stations.

Content

For science, we will focus on what a scientist does and how to think like a scientist. We also will work on matter and motion.
