Happy New Year to you all! 🎉
I hope you’ve had a restful and enjoyable break and are feeling refreshed as we gently settle back into the new term and season ahead.
It’s been lovely to welcome our children back to school and see them reconnect with familiar routines, friends and learning, bringing with them their energy and enthusiasm. We’re taking time to ease everyone back in, helping the children feel happy, confident and ready for the weeks ahead, building momentum at a pace that supports everyone.
This term promises to be an exciting one. We’ll be focusing on developing oracy across the school, supporting our children to express themselves confidently and articulate their ideas clearly. We’re also looking forward to balance bike and cycle training sessions, poetry workshops that will bring words to life, and our “Stay and Learn” sessions – we can’t wait to welcome you into our classrooms to see your children’s learning in action.
Thank you, as always, for your continued support and partnership. Together, we’ll make this a positive and rewarding term for all our children.
This week, Caterpillars and Butterflies really enjoyed seeing and exploring the snow. For many, this was the first time they saw the snow. They were very fascinated and captivated with the experience. The children used words and sentences, such as “wow”, “snow is falling from the sky”, “white”, “is freezing”, “very cold”, “raining”, “ice”, “snow is dropping from the sky” and “shower” and other words.
Year 1 Cheetahs had an exciting start to the week when they discovered that an alien spaceship had crashed in their playground! The children found yellow fur and mysterious footprints, which inspired a range of imaginative writing tasks. They began by writing questions about the incident, before discovering that the clues belonged to a missing alien called Beegu, who was later spotted in the Year 1 classroom. The children created missing posters to help find her, wrote advice using imperative verbs to tell others what to do if they found Beegu, and finally used adjectives to describe her feelings.
Happy New Year and welcome back! This week, our class has settled in well and have shown themselves ready to learn. The children have shown a positive attitude and are working hard.
We have started rehearsals for our upcoming performance, and the class is very excited. They are looking forward to showing you how talented they are. Our performance will take place on Thursday 12th February in the morning with the precise time confirmed closer to the date.
If you are able to help your child practise their lines and actions at home, it will help them feel more confident and will make the performance even better.
Thank you for your continued support. We look forward to seeing you on Thursday the 12th.
Eagle Class recently took part in Pedestrian Skills Training with For2Feet, where they learned essential road safety skills to help them become safer pedestrians. The training took place around our school and gave the children practical, real-life experience. They learned the important Stop, Look, Listen rules for crossing the road, explored different types of crossings such as zebra, pelican and island crossings, and practised how to cross safely at a junction. The children also discussed the dangers of distractions when crossing the road, helping them to understand how to stay alert and safe in their local area.
Year 4 have been delving into The Selfish Giant by Oscar Wilde.
To introduce the story’s key theme of selfishness, the children wrote a letter to a friend explaining how unfair their class teacher had been by separating the class and giving resources to only one group. This imaginative activity encouraged pupils to step into a character’s shoes, express emotions, and explore ideas of fairness and selfish behaviour. The children will build on this work as they continue to explore how selfishness and kindness shape the events of the story.
Year 5 have been an absolute delight in their return from the holidays! They have come back with a dedication that has been a pleasure to teach! This has been evident in the way they have tackled the extremely challenging concept of short division! They have a very strong grasp on times tables and it has been clear to see this week! Happy new year!
Year 6 Tigers have returned to school with a fantastic attitude to learning and have truly hit the ground running. Over the past few days, they’ve shown that they are focused, motivated and ready for the challenges ahead.
They have been revising practising key skills in both Maths and Literacy. Using our new class text, ‘The Promise’ as inspiration, they have been exploring the word ‘promise’ and its synonyms, using their understanding of how verbs can be changed into nouns to think carefully about meaning and intention.
They have been working collaboratively to create promises and pledges about how they will improve and care for the green spaces in our school garden. This work encouraged them to reflect, discuss and commit to positive actions, linking language learning with responsibility and care for our environment.
Computational thinking is a set of problem-solving skills that help children learn how to think logically, creatively and systematically. It isn’t just about computers or coding – it’s about how we approach problems in everyday life. These skills support learning across the curriculum, including maths, literacy and science, and help children become confident, independent thinkers.
Computational thinking is usually grouped into six key concepts:
Algorithms – creating clear steps and rules to follow
Abstraction – focusing on what’s important and ignoring unnecessary detail
Decomposition – breaking big problems into smaller, manageable parts
Pattern – spotting similarities, differences and trends
Evaluation – judging how well something works and how it could be improved
Logical reasoning – explaining thinking and making sensible choices
The attached PDF contains a range of quick, easy and fun activities that develop these skills through everyday play – cooking, games, art, puzzles and family challenges. They are designed to be simple to fit into busy family life, with no special equipment needed.
By trying one activity each week, children:
Practise important thinking skills little and often
Make strong links between school learning and real life
Build confidence explaining their ideas and decisions
Learn that mistakes are part of improving and problem-solving
Each activity clearly explains what to do and what children are learning, making it easy for parents to support learning at home.
We encourage families to dip into the activities regularly and enjoy learning together.
Small weekly moments can make a big difference in developing skills for the future.
The 'WakeUpWednesday' guides empower and equip parents, carers and educators with the confidence and practical skills to be able to have informed and age-appropriate conversations with children about online safety, mental health and well-being, and climate change.
Each week we will post a relevant guide to support our school community's knowledge and understanding of how to keep safe online and new things to be aware of.
This week's online safety focus is ''Digital devices and wellbeing ". Please click on the PDF to enlarge it.
