Celebrating Mrs Tagg's Retirement
We have some bittersweet news to share with you all.
After an incredible 19 years and 11 months of dedicated service to Vauxhall Primary School, Mrs Tagg has retired.
For nearly two decades, Mrs Tagg has touched the lives of countless children and families in our school community. Her warmth, dedication and commitment to our pupils have been truly remarkable and she will be greatly missed by staff, children and parents alike.
We know many of you will want to join us in showing our appreciation for everything Mrs Tagg has done for our school. We are collecting for a retirement gift to thank her for her wonderful years of service.
If you would like to contribute, please bring cash donations to the school office by Friday 8th May. All contributions, no matter how small, will be warmly received.
Thank you for helping us give Mrs Tagg the send off she deserves. We wish her a very happy and well-deserved retirement.
As part of our Fairy Tales theme, we’ve spent the last fortnight exploring Cinderella. The children had a wonderful time bringing the story to life through roleplay, reenacting the magical ball and a grand palace dinner party. To help them truly inhabit their roles, they used character masks, practiced key story vocabulary, and performed along to atmospheric music.
This week, our Year 1 children enjoyed an exciting trip to the Garden Museum, where they learnt all about microhabitats and minibeasts. During their visit, the children explored the garden and took part in a minibeast hunt, discovering creatures such as spiders, woodlice and ladybirds in their natural environments.
They also visited the wormery, where they learnt how worms break down food waste such as fruit and vegetable scraps to produce nutrient-rich compost and a liquid fertiliser often called “worm tea.” Using microscopes, the children had the opportunity to observe the worms up close, noticing their features and movements in detail.
This week, our pupils have been busy exploring the fascinating world of habitats and microhabitats. In class, they learned about the different environments where plants and animals live, and how these spaces provide everything living things need to survive.
To bring this learning to life, we headed outdoors to investigate habitats right on our doorstep. The children explored the playground and surrounding local area, carefully observing and identifying places where living things might be found. From under logs and leaves to grassy patches and hedges, they discovered a variety of microhabitats and discussed the creatures that might call them home.
We also took time to appreciate our local area and all it has to offer. Being so close to Vauxhall Station gives us easy access to a rich and varied environment, helping us connect classroom learning with the real world. The children thoroughly enjoyed their outdoor learning experiences and showed great curiosity and enthusiasm throughout.
Well done to everyone for their excellent work!
In maths, Eagle Class have been learning about the 2, 4, and 8 times tables. We have been focusing on identifying and explaining what multiples are within these times tables. To help us understand this, three children were chosen to play a multiplication game. The first child clapped for every multiple of 2, the second clapped for every multiple of 4, and the third clapped for every multiple of 8. Working together as a group, they then identified which numbers they had in common, helping them to see the relationships between these multiples. Children took turns in playing the game and have now become times table rockstars with their 2, 4 and 8 times tables.
Year 4 Get Energised with Electricity!
Year 4 have continued their exciting exploration of electricity this week. They learned all about the key components needed to build a circuit, including bulbs, wires, batteries and buzzers, before putting their knowledge into practice through hands-on investigation.
The children then designed and built their own circuits, carefully testing them to see how they worked. They experimented with using different numbers of batteries and observed how this affected the strength of the circuit. It was fantastic to see them noticing how the brightness of the bulb and the sound of the buzzer changed depending on the power supplied.
A brilliant week of scientific thinking, teamwork and discovery!
The Year 5 trip to IntoUniversity was an exciting and eye-opening experience, especially during the space workshop. The children explored the vastness of our solar system by learning about the relative distances between the planets, which helped them understand just how far apart everything is in space. One of the most engaging activities was designing living areas on some of the most extreme planets: Venus, Neptune, and Saturn. They had to think carefully about the harsh and volatile conditions on each planet, such as the intense heat and pressure on Venus, the freezing temperatures and strong winds on Neptune, and the lack of a solid surface on Saturn. Using their creativity and problem-solving skills, they came up with imaginative ideas for how humans might survive in such challenging environments, making the workshop both fun and thought-provoking. Well done to all for representing the school so well!
Alongside this helpful SATs guide for families, we wanted to share how incredibly hard our Year 6 Tigers have been working.
They have been showing great determination and resilience in their revision lessons and booster sessions, approaching each challenge with a positive attitude.
We are really proud of the effort they are putting in and the progress they are making as they prepare for their SATs. You may also be wondering how best to support your child’s mental health during this time. Creating a calm and supportive home environment can make a big difference - focusing on effort rather than results and reminding your child that SATs are just a small part of their journey through school. It’s also important to prioritise downtime and good sleep routines so they don’t feel overwhelmed.
It’s worth remembering that feeling anxious is a completely normal response to situations like SATs. A simple strategy that can help in the moment is encouraging your child to take three slow breaths in and three slow breaths out, which can help them feel calmer and more in control. The Togetherness website also offer a range of helpful guidance on supporting children through stressful times and managing anxiety in a healthy way.
We are incredibly proud of the children who took part in the TCS London Mini Marathon on Saturday. It was a fantastic event, filled with energy, excitement, and plenty of sunshine! Our pupils, from Reception all the way up to Year 6, showed great determination and enthusiasm as they took on the challenge.
Along the route, we were thrilled to spot so many friendly faces cheering us on, which really lifted the children’s spirits. It was also a wonderful opportunity for our pupils to meet, compete and make friends with other children from schools across the city, making the experience even more special.
A huge thank you goes to our parents, as well as Ms Darteh and Mr Ferdinand, for taking part and offering their time and support. Opportunities like this are only possible because of the encouragement and involvement of our school community, and we are very grateful.
Well done again to all our runners—you represented the school brilliantly!
The 'WakeUpWednesday' guides empower and equip parents, carers and educators with the confidence and practical skills to be able to have informed and age-appropriate conversations with children about online safety, mental health and well-being, and climate change.
Each week we will post a relevant guide to support our school community's knowledge and understanding of how to keep safe online and new things to be aware of.

Whole School Target 95% 🎯🥳
This week's punctuality award goes to 🥁🥁 Ravens (Year 5) 🥳
Every child has a legal right to a full-time education, and parents are responsible for making sure their child attends school regularly. Good attendance helps children achieve their best and keeps them safe.
Our expectations:
Arrive on time – School starts at 8.50am. Children arriving late miss important learning and can feel unsettled
Every day counts – Even a few days' absence can affect progress and friendships
Let us know – If your child is unwell, please contact the school office or report via the Studybugs app on the first day of absence
Sun Safety Reminder ☀️😎🧴
As the weather gets warmer, please remember to protect your child from the sun:
What you can do:
Apply high-factor sunscreen (SPF 30+) before school
Send your child with a sun hat to wear at playtime and lunch
Provide a water bottle so they can stay hydrated throughout the day
What we'll do:
Encourage children to play in shaded areas when possible
Remind children to wear their hats outdoors
Ensure water is readily available
Working together, we can keep all our children safe and comfortable in the sun.
If you have any concerns about a child's wellbeing, please contact our safeguarding team via the school office : office@vauxhallprimary.org.uk
