I hope you all had a wonderful Easter break and are feeling refreshed and ready for what promises to be an exciting summer term at Vauxhall Primary.
This term is always one of my favourites – the days are longer, the weather is (hopefully!) warmer, and our school really comes alive with energy and enthusiasm. We have so much to look forward to, including exciting school trips, after-school clubs, and visits from special guests who will inspire and engage our children.
Our children have made fantastic progress this year, and I'm incredibly proud of their hard work and resilience.
Behind the scenes, our staff team will also be undertaking important training to ensure we continue to provide the very best support for every child. Their dedication to professional development means your children benefit from the highest quality teaching and care.
Thank you for your continued support and partnership. Together, we're making Vauxhall Primary a wonderful place for every child to learn, grow, and thrive.
Here's to a brilliant summer term!
This week fabulous writing from Butterfly class. Some of the children drew and wrote about their holiday experiences while others wrote about our story book of the week- Cinderella.
The children drew beautiful pictures of their favourite fairy tale character.
This week in Year 1, the children started reading a new book in literacy, Iggy Peck, Architect. The children were very engaged with the story and enjoyed exploring the character’s creativity and determination.
During the story, Iggy found himself stuck in a dilemma and needed some advice. The children shared their ideas with Iggy by writing him an email, ensuring they used imperative verbs to create clear command sentences. This helped them practise giving instructions and offering helpful suggestions.
We have had a wonderful start to our new learning this term. The children have begun reading a new book called Toys in Space by Mini Grey, and they are already very engaged and excited by the story.
In our English lessons, the children have started exploring different ways of writing. They have been using noun phrases to add more detail to their ideas and learning how to use prepositions to describe where things are. We are also continuing to support the children in developing their handwriting and presentation, encouraging them to take pride in their work.
It has been lovely to see the children’s creativity and enthusiasm growing as they respond to the story in different ways.
In Eagle Class, the children returned to school enthusiastic and ready to engage with their writing. The lesson began with the teacher in role as Mrs Venders, a retired publisher, who explained that a set of mysterious illustrations had been left to her to publish. The children were invited to help create a book titled The Mysteries of Harris Burdick, according to Eagle Class.
The illustrations, along with separate title and caption cards, were placed on the tables. The children explored the images, matching them to the correct titles and captions while discussing and justifying their ideas, supported by guiding questions on the board.
They then chose one illustration and wrote a summary of the story they imagined, using past tense and conjunctions to show time and cause. The children showed strong creativity and engagement, producing thoughtful and imaginative responses.
Year 4 have begun their exciting journey into ancient Egypt with The Story of Tutankhamun by Patricia Cleveland-Peck. To spark curiosity and immerse the children in the topic, the unit started with an engaging bucket time activity, where intriguing images and artefacts were gradually revealed. This captured the children’s imagination and prompted thoughtful discussions, as they shared their ideas and predictions about what the images might represent. The session created a real sense of excitement, setting the stage perfectly for exploring the fascinating life and legacy of Tutankhamun.
Year 5 have settled back into school brilliantly and have been channelled their focus into our new Literacy book, Anne Frank. On Tuesday they completed a virtual tour of the secret annex that Anne hid in during World War 2. The children followed this up with brilliant empathetic letters to Anne. They were a delight to read and I look forward to reading more fabulous pieces during the rest of this term!

The most important thing at this stage is balance. Encouragement, reassurance and maintaining a calm routine at home will support your child just as much as revision. We are incredibly proud of how hard the children are working and will continue to support them every step of the way.
The Duchy of Cornwall is developing plans for 55 Kennington Oval, the former Archbishop Tenison's School site.
What's being proposed: The plans include new housing and community spaces for local families. The Duchy is also working with Montgomery Hall and St Mark's Vicarage to create spaces that support our diverse Kennington community.
Have your say: Public events were held in March to share early ideas, and the Duchy is still welcoming feedback from local residents. Your views will help shape the next phase of design.

The 'WakeUpWednesday' guides empower and equip parents, carers and educators with the confidence and practical skills to be able to have informed and age-appropriate conversations with children about online safety, mental health and well-being, and climate change.
Each week we will post a relevant guide to support our school community's knowledge and understanding of how to keep safe online and new things to be aware of.
