The Year 1 Cheetahs started their Design and Technology cooking and nutrition topic, where they will be learning about healthy foods and making their own smoothies. They learnt how to identify fruits by recognising that fruits contain seeds. They explored different foods, discussed which ones were fruits and explained their reasoning. The children then sorted foods into fruits and non-fruits, developing their understanding that the presence of seeds is the key feature used to identify a fruit.

Our children recently enjoyed a visit to Durning Library, where they explored the library, discovered a wide range of books and learned about the many free resources available to them.

Reading is one of the most important skills children develop. It supports learning across the curriculum, builds vocabulary, sparks imagination and helps children become confident, independent learners. During the visit, the children found out how the library works, how they can borrow books and learned about the Summer Reading Challenge, which encourages children to keep reading throughout the summer holidays.

If you have not already done so, we encourage you to take your child to your local library, sign them up for free membership and borrow books to enjoy together over the summer. Libraries offer a fantastic range of books, e-books, audiobooks and activities, all free of charge.

Please also encourage your child to take part in the Summer Reading Challenge. It is a fun way to keep children reading during the holidays, helping them maintain and develop their reading skills ready for September.

• Provide a reason for the absence
