We hope you all had a restful half-term break. As we head towards the second half of the spring term, we have lots of exciting learning planned and we're looking forward to seeing the children flourish over the coming weeks.
As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please don't hesitate to contact your child's class teacher or the school office.
Safeguarding Parent / Carer Survey:
🌟 The results are in!
Following our safeguarding survey, we're really pleased that:
✅ 95% of you feel your child is safe at school
✅ 95% of you are confident we keep your child safe
✅ 100% of you feel we would take your concerns seriously and act appropriately
✅ 95% of you would recommend our school to other parents because children are kept safe here
This is fantastic and shows we have a strong safeguarding culture at Vauxhall Primary School.
Areas you would like more information about:
"Please inform parents of how to access the safeguarding policy, as not many are aware" - Our policy can be found here on our website.
"School pick up permission" - Please check your email for a letter full of information about who can collect your child and our security measures.
"I hope lockdown measures are in place to keep the children secure in event of any major incidents like intrusion etc." - Today we successfully completed our scheduled lockdown drill, with everyone secure within 5 minutes. Like fire drills, these practices are an important part of our safety procedures and help ensure everyone knows what to do in the very unlikely event of an emergency. Well done to all our pupils!
Thank you again for taking the time to complete the survey. Your feedback is really important to us and helps us improve.
We'll ask for your views again next year to see how we're doing.
We’re excited to share that our Ready, Steady, Read sponsored reading challenge is now underway and runs until 26 March!

Every minute read makes a difference, and the class with the most minutes will be crowned our Class Champions! 📚✨
Thank you for supporting a love of reading at home!
Virtual Usborne Book Fair – Monday 2nd– Monday 9th March 2026
We’re excited to be hosting a Virtual Usborne Book Fair from 2nd–9th March 2026 in partnership with our local Usborne Partner, Jessica Campbell. Every book purchased will help earn FREE books for our school — Usborne will donate up to 60% of total sales in free books (for example, £360 in free books for every £600 spent!).
From 1 March, you can browse and buy books by scanning the QR code. Orders will be delivered to school during the week beginning 16th March.
Please also watch the short videos showcasing favourite reads for each year group to help you choose — then simply use the QR code to purchase any books you’d like.
As part of our work with the A Town Explores A Book, children have been inspired by John Agard’s “My Name is Book” and were challenged to invent a book that has never been created before!
They came up with some wonderfully imaginative ideas and now have the opportunity to enter a short writing competition based on their invention.
Please see the flyer for full details. Entries can be returned on paper to Ms Coombs or submitted online by 20th March. We can’t wait to see their creative ideas brought to life!
Our Coding Club has been buzzing with creativity as children use Scratch, a fun, block-based coding program, to design and build their own video games. Scratch makes it easy for kids to bring their ideas to life by snapping together code blocks to create animations, games, and interactive stories. It’s a great way for pupils to learn programming skills while having fun and being creative.
Parents can explore Scratch and try it at home here: https://scratch.mit.edu.
This week in EYFS, the children have been learning ‘doubles’ in maths.
Doubles mean “two lots of something”, having two groups of the exact same number and adding them together to find a total.
For example, Double 1 is 1 + 1 (makes 2); Double 2 is 2 + 2 (makes 4); Double 5 is 5 + 5 (makes 10).
This week in Caterpillars, we have been reading ‘The Very Hungry Caterpillar’, We made our own caterpillar and butterfly using collage materials.
This week, Cheetah Class have launched their exciting new Design & Technology topic, Mechanisms: Wheels and Axles. By the end of the unit, the children will design and make their very own pull-along toy!
To begin, they explored how wheels and axles work. The children investigated what wheels need to do to help a base move and discussed how axles are attached securely. They practised choosing the most suitable tools for cutting different shapes and carefully cut out their own wheels.
Over the coming weeks, they will continue designing, building and evaluating their ideas as they work towards creating a moving toy of their own. We can’t wait to see the finished products.
This week in Year 2, we have started our new Science topic: Plants.
The children have begun learning about what plants need to grow and stay healthy. We talked about seeds and how they grow into plants. To help us understand this, we went outside and planted (sowed) some seeds in different conditions. For example, some seeds will have more sunlight, some will have less, and some may have different amounts of water.
Over the next few weeks, we will watch the seeds carefully and see what happens as they grow. The children will be looking for differences and talking about why some plants grow better than others. This will help them learn how light, water, air and warmth help plants to grow.
In our literacy lesson, Eagle Class arrived to find the classroom set up as a tea-tasting workshop. Their teacher was in the role of The Royal Tea Taster and explained that, before becoming apprentice tea-tasters, the children had to pass a special test: they needed to describe teas using rich, detailed vocabulary.
The children smelt and then tasted 6–7 different unlabelled teas that had been prepared and cooled beforehand. They discussed the flavours and created descriptive phrases to match what they experienced.
At the end of the workshop, they were told they had all successfully passed! To complete the challenge, each child wrote a description of one of the teas, including at least one of the descriptive phrases they had created.
Year 4 had a fantastic time working with the Corali Dance Company from Lambeth this week. They learned exciting dance moves inspired by the famous Lambeth Walk, then worked in pairs to create their own choreography using historical poster images as inspiration. The energy and creativity were brilliant – well done, Year 4!
On Thursday, Year 5 travelled to Twi Twmple Place to visit the art exhibition “The Weight of Vulnerability”. It was a very insightful trip and the children had the opportunity to become art critics during the morning and artists after lunch!
They came up with some extremely creative and thoughtful observations of various pieces, and showed great maturity when looking at pieces involving mental health, racism and misogyny. After lunch, the children created their own pieces that showcased their perfect mindful room. We had some excellent ideas involving nature, game rooms, swimming pools and their heritage too!
Year 6 have been travelling back in time to explore the Suffragette movement, bringing history to life through an exciting courtroom role-play. Inspired by figures such as Emmeline Pankhurst, the children took on the roles of lawyers in the trials linked to the fight for women’s right to vote. They spoke clearly and confidently, using fantastic oracy skills to present persuasive arguments. It has been wonderful to see them grow in confidence while also developing a deeper understanding of equality, fairness and the importance of standing up for what is right.
The 'WakeUpWednesday' guides empower and equip parents, carers and educators with the confidence and practical skills to be able to have informed and age-appropriate conversations with children about online safety, mental health and well-being, and climate change.
Each week we will post a relevant guide to support our school community's knowledge and understanding of how to keep safe online and new things to be aware of.
This week's online safety focus is the social networking app ''WhatsApp". Please click on the PDF to enlarge it.

Reminder: Term-Time Holidays ⛔
We know family time is precious, but we want to remind you that we cannot authorise term-time absence for holidays or leisure trips.
Leave of absence during term-time can only be granted in exceptional circumstances.
Any requests must be made in advance, and we cannot grant leave for holidays or other absence for leisure or recreation.
Why attendance matters: Every day in school counts. Children being absent from school, particularly repeatedly and/or for prolonged periods, can act as a vital warning sign of safeguarding concerns and impacts their learning and progress.
If you need to request absence: If you believe your circumstances are exceptional (such as bereavement or religious observance), please contact the school office for an leave of absence form before making any arrangements.
With only 190 school days in a year, every single day counts towards your child's education. Missing just one week means your child loses 2.6% of their learning time for the year.
We're here to help!
If you're finding mornings difficult, please speak to us. We're here to help and can offer practical support and strategies to make mornings smoother.
Safeguarding is everyone's responsibility!
