#WakeUpWednesday - Supporting children going back to school
+ our regularly updated Diary Dates, Term Dates, our weekly Headteacher Awards, Weekly Attendance & Punctuality figures and TT Rockstars.
Dear Parents, Carers and Pupils,
Welcome back to a brand-new school year at Vauxhall Primary! I hope you all had a restful and enjoyable summer break. It has been wonderful to see the children return this week with such enthusiasm, smiles and readiness to learn.
This year brings lots of exciting opportunities for our pupils to grow, explore and achieve their very best. As a school, we remain committed to providing a safe, nurturing and stimulating environment where every child can thrive.
I am particularly delighted to share news about our new class names. Over the past term, each class took part in discussions and a vote to choose the animal that best represents them. Together, the children co-wrote descriptions about their chosen animals, linking these qualities to the way they learn and work together. From now on, each class will carry their chosen name with them as they progress through the school, creating a strong sense of identity and continuity on their journey at Vauxhall Primary. You can find details of our new class names below, along with information about who will be in each class team.
I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate two members of staff on their recent achievements. Miss Davis has successfully completed her National Professional Qualification for Senior Leadership (NPQSL), and Mr McQuillan has successfully completed his National Professional Qualification for Leading Primary Mathematics (NPQLPM). These are significant accomplishments, and we are very proud of their commitment to leadership and to supporting the continued success of our pupils and staff.
I would also like to thank our staff for their hard work in preparing for the start of term, and our families for the ongoing support you give to your children and to the school. I look forward to an inspiring and successful year ahead for our whole community.
Below you can see who will be part of each class team this year. Together, they will be supporting your child’s learning journey and helping to bring the class identity to life.
We are also looking forward to Meet the Teacher Week, taking place from 8th–12th September. This will be a great chance for you to get to know your child’s teacher and hear about the year ahead. See below for times:
We are Caterpillars and Butterflies! 🦋
Our youngest children start their school journey in Nursery as Caterpillars. Just like caterpillars, they are busy exploring, learning and growing every day.
When they move into Reception, they become Butterflies. This reflects the wonderful progress they make as they gain confidence, develop new skills and spread their wings, ready for the next stages of school life.
The names capture the exciting transformation that takes place in the early years and celebrate the amazing growth our children make.
Our Caterpillars have been exploring their classrooms, the outdoors, making new friends, and enjoying a range of exciting activities to support their learning and development.

Creativity!
We are called the Cheetahs because we are fast, clever, and full of energy! Just like real cheetahs, we love to zoom into our learning, try new things, and never give up. We’re quick thinkers, speedy learners, and always ready to pounce on a new challenge. Go, Cheetahs! 🐾💨
Our Cheetah Motto:
“Fast to learn, brave and bright – Cheetahs shine with all their might!” 🌟
This week, Cheetahs began their new art topic: Spirals! They explored drawing spirals of different sizes using a variety of materials, including crayons, pens, pencils, and oil pastels. The children also experimented with creating spirals to music and emotions — for example, a quiet spiral and then a LOUD spiral — resulting in some wonderfully creative artwork.
Year 2 pupils voted to be called ‘Lions’
Where Leaders Are Made
In this room, we are more than just students —
We are LIONS:
Brave – We face every challenge with courage.
Strong – We rise together, lifting each other up.
Focused – With sharp minds and determined hearts, we stay on the path to greatness.
Loyal – Like a pride, we protect and support one another.
Bold – We speak up, stand tall, and dare to dream big.
Here, every roar counts.
Every voice matters.
Every lion leads.
Step inside and join the pride.
Together, we are unstoppable.
Together, we are LIONS.
Exploring Our Local Environment – A Visit to the River Thames
This term, our Literacy theme is all about conservation and the environment, and we’ve started with the inspiring book “We Are Water Protectors.” This beautiful story is helping us learn about the importance of water—how essential it is to life, and why we must all work together to keep it clean and healthy.
To bring our learning to life, we took a short trip to the River Thames, our closest water source. While there, we explored the many ways both we and the local community use and rely on the river. It was a fantastic opportunity for the children to observe first-hand how people interact with water in everyday life—whether for transport, wildlife, leisure, or conservation efforts.
This visit has sparked some wonderful discussions and ideas, which we’ll be using to support our writing over the coming weeks. We're looking forward to seeing how the children use what they've seen and learned to become true "water protectors" in their own words!
We are the Eagles! 🦅
We are Eagle Class because eagles represent so many of the qualities we value in our classroom.
Eagles soar with strength, focus, and determination just like we will when we rise to new challenges this year.
Like eagles soar high in the sky, we want to aim high, try our best, and take on new adventures, even when things feel tricky. When problems rise, we will not fear. We work as one and persevere. Eagles have sharp vision, clear and strong, reminding us to focus all year long. To keep our goals steady, bright, and true, and see the whole journey, not just the view.
In Eagle Class, we work as a team. We lift each other up, support one another, and help each other grow. Together, we’re ready to spread our wings and fly through Year 3 side by side!
Eagle class have been busy learning how to add three numbers together, known as the addition of three addends. They have been using aggregation stories with three parts to help them understand how these numbers combine to make a total. To make adding easier and quicker, the children have been practicing number facts up to 10, which are really helpful when working with three small numbers. They’ve also been using doubles and near doubles strategies, making addition both fun and efficient. These skills are helping them build a strong foundation in maths for the rest of the year! They all did an excellent job flying through their learning.
Year 4 Communication Challenge
In Year 4, pupils took part in a fun communication activity to develop their listening and teamwork skills. Working in groups of three, one child gave clear instructions to describe a hidden picture, another carefully followed the instructions to draw it, while the third observed and noted one strength and one area for improvement.
This activity helped the children to practise giving clear instructions, listening carefully, and working successfully as a team.
We are Ravens !🐦⬛
Ravens are amazing birds - they are smart, curious and full of creativity. They work together to solve problems, help each other and find clever solutions, just like we do in class. Ravens are also strong and brave, flying high and adapting to whatever challenges come their way. They remind us that when we support one another, we can rise higher than ever before. Being the Ravens means we are a that is thoughtful, resilient, and ready to spread our wings to reach new heights. We are proud to carry the name Ravens - a symbol of our intelligence, strength and soaring possibilities!
We are so proud of how well Year 5 have settled into their first week back after the summer break. They have approached their new routines with enthusiasm, kindness, and a real eagerness to learn. It has been wonderful to see the children supporting one another and showing such positive attitudes as they begin this exciting new school year. We are really looking forward to the months ahead and can’t wait to see all that Year 5 will achieve!
We are Tigers !🐯
As Tigers, we will be embodying strength, courage and determination this year - always aiming high, supporting one another and showing resilience when things get tough. It’s going to be an exciting year of growth and achievement and we are so proud of how Year 6 have begun their journey!
The Tigers have made a fantastic start to the new academic year! The children have settled in quickly and are already showing great focus, enthusiasm and readiness for the challenges ahead.
