In this course, Vassar students create a curriculum for 12th graders that examines historical examples of social change in various communities. They are pushing into a year-long class on how to be civically involved within their local community, where students develop projects that focus on one issue within the community, identify root causes, and create an action plan to solve the issue. The Vassar students develop their own curriculum that must be both a mirror of students’ own experiences and a window into the experiences of others, and use this as a catalyst for social change and action. Finally, the group implements the curriculum with high school youth in the spring.
Special thanks to the Academy of American Studies and Hassina Shah for welcoming us into their classroom to delve into what it means to teach about human rights in the past and present.
