Professional Summary

Mr. Luis D. Contreras, II, M.F.A.

Hello.  I am really excited for the 2021-2022 school year here at Beethoven Secondary.  I grew up in the Rio Grande Valley and I am a proud graduate of Mission High School - class of '98.  I received by Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the University of Texas - Pan American in 2004 with a focus in studio art (painting and drawing).  I went on to receive my Master of Fine Arts degree from The Ohio State University in 2006 where I specialized in Printmaking.  In the last 14 years, I have worked in museum administration for institutions in the upper, mid, and lower Rio Grande Valley.  I have also worked as an adjunct arts instructor for the University of Texas - Pan American (UT-RGV) and South Texas College where I have taught Drawing, Painting, Design, Printmaking, and Art Appreciation.  My goal is to bring a well-rounded arts experience to the students.

Art at Vanguard Academy is designed to educate students on the ever-changing art-world, as well as to provide hands-on experience practicing standards that impact observation & perception, creative expression,  historical and cultural relevance, and critical evaluation & response to art.

"Arts education is critical for helping students develop creativity, critical thinking, and problem solving abilities." -Megan Chernin

Visual Arts at Vanguard Academy

Beethoven Secondary

Visual Arts at Vanguard Academy offers students a variety of views of artwork, history, culture and political views of our world. It also teaches them patience while participating in group work with other students with different opinions. Visual Arts provides students with opportunities to think outside the box, forcing them to get out of their comfort zone. Students develop self confidence through the skills they are taught and learn how to appreciate and critique artwork and life. The life skills that are learned through Visual Arts will help them in college, with goal achievement and to develop multiple perspectives in preparation for their futures.
