In partnership with Eastern Michigan University, students at Belleville High School can enroll in the Geographic Information System (GIS) program. Topics covered are navigating ArcGIS Pro, map design and symbolizing, map projections and coordinate systems, map layouts, story maps, importing and using file geodatabases, manipulating attribute tables, utilizing vector data, and preparing for both the FAA part 107 Drone Pilot Exam and ESRI certification exam. Students earn high school credit, EMU credit, and receive a paid summer internship. While there is not currently a CTE program designation for GIS, Mr. Watkins is actively working with the State of Michigan to create the first CTE GIS program in the state.
The partnership between EMU and BHS has resulted in many valuable experiences for both the students and community including mapping the water shutoffs in the City of Belleville, expediting bus routes for Van Buren Public Schools, and allowing easier locating of elementary school boundaries, all through student projects.
On Wednesday, November 19, the class was visited by Mr. Chad Newton, CEO of the Wayne County Airport Authority and BHS Alumni class of 1988, and Dr. Yichun Xie, EMU Professor and Director of the Institute for Geospatial Research and Education, to discuss the expansion of the GIS program to include additional EMU courses and credit opportunities and well as a possible partnership with Detroit Metro Airport.
