Small group counseling gives students a supportive space to connect, learn, and grow alongside peers who may be experiencing similar challenges. Groups may focus on:
Friendship and social skills
Managing feelings
Worry and stress
Self-confidence and self-esteem
Grief and loss
Family changes
Coping skills and resilience
Problem-solving and decision-making
Students may be recommended for a group by a teacher, parent/guardian, counselor, or other school staff member based on their individual needs. Parent/guardian permission is obtained before a student participates in a small group.
School counselors provide brief, school-based support and do not provide long-term or clinical therapy. If a student or family may benefit from additional support from a outisde mental health provider, the school counselor can help connect families with community resources and counseling options that may meet their needs. Families are always welcome to reach out to the school counselor for help finding additional support.
