FIRST GRADE NEWS

Settling into winter with the last week of January being a very short week.  Our music program and the 100th day of school will now take place the first week of February.  See the upcoming dates section above for new dates.   See below for the current learning topics we are studying in our classrooms.  You can help us out by putting your child's name on all fo their clothing items, lunch boxes and water bottles, as well as helping your child remember to complete their reading log for all reading steps completed at home.  Thank you!

February Learning Topics:

Reading: This quarter, students will begin exploring the genre of Family Stories while identifying story elements of character, setting, plot: problem/resolution, and author's purpose.

Writing: This quarter, students will create a collection of story retells and narrative fiction pieces.  As students learn about fiction story elements, in the genre of Family Stories, they will practice writing about story elements they identify in texts read as well as practice writing their own stories focusing on specific story elements.

Math: Students will explore place value, tens and ones, and comparing numbers to 120.  

Science: Students will explore heat energy and properties of matter.

Social Studies: Students will continue learning about customs and traditions of our community, state, and nation, while learning about contributions of historical figures, including Martin Luther King Jr.

* Please label ALL of your child's layers - coats, jackets, hoodies - with your child's first and last names.  It helps us get them back to the correct person when they get lost. *
