Read below to find answers to questions you may have about Transitional Kindergarten.
Will my child still go to Kindergarten?
Yes, TK is the 1st year of a two-year Kindergarten program. It provides students with a developmentally appropriate learning model that will prepare them to succeed in Kindergarten and beyond.
Does every school site offer TK?
No, in our district we currently use a regionalized model offered at seven different elementary sites. The sites offering TK this year are Columbia, El Potrero, Lasselle, May Ranch, Mead Valley, Rainbow Ridge, and Val Verde.
Is TK a full day program?
No, just like Kindergarten, TK is offered with the “Early Bird/Later Gator'' staggered start times that provides Early Birds with a smaller group instructional block of 105 instructional minutes at the beginning of the school day. Then, Later Gators arrive after that block for a 150 minute overlap block which includes a 30 minute lunch. Later Gators then receive their 105 instructional minute small group block at the end of the instructional day after Early Birds are dismissed.
Is there Before/After School care for my child?
Yes, all of our TK sites offer the Think Together program from 7:30-9:15 and 11:45-3:00. El Potrero Elementary School & Mead Valley Elementary School provide both TK and California State Preschool Program on their campuses which allow for up to 9 hours of care. El Potrero serves as a CSPP and TK-only campus. Mead Valley Elementary has a separated campus area for their CSPP and TK classes within the larger K-5 site, which also offers Dual Language Immersion. Both of these sites allow parents to enroll their students in an Early Bird TK class and an afternoon PM CSPP class. Separate enrollment in each program is required and follows current eligibility requirements.
