At Valor, students thrive when they feel connected, supported, and known. Our approach is grounded in comprehensive student learning — an educational philosophy focused on developing the full range of a student's capacities: cognitive, emotional, social, and practical. While academic success is important, we also recognize that social-emotional growth, healthy relationships, and a positive school culture are essential to helping every student reach their full potential.
That's where our Compass Team comes in.
One of the questions we hear most often is, "What exactly does a Compass Coach do?"
The short answer is this: we help create and cultivate the conditions for students to be successful socially, emotionally, behaviorally, and relationally.
Many people assume that because Compass Coaches are involved when behavioral challenges arise, our role is primarily about discipline. While accountability is important, that's actually only a small part of what we do.
What We Do
Build relationships. We spend time getting to know students, understanding their strengths, and supporting them as they grow.
Help students learn from mistakes. When a student makes a poor choice, our goal is to help them understand the impact of their actions and develop strategies for making better choices going forward.
Repair relationships. We help students advocate for their needs when relational damage occurs. We then facilitate conversations between peers or between students and staff that encourage accountability, understanding, and restoration.
Support individualized needs. For students with 504s or IEPs, we work closely with teachers and support staff to ensure behavioral supports are implemented consistently.
Promote a positive school culture. We help students understand expectations, celebrate positive choices, and provide support when students need help meeting those expectations.
Partner with families. We're not working around you — we're working with you. The best outcomes happen when school and home are aligned.
What We Don't Do
We don't see students as their mistakes. Difficult moments are opportunities for growth, not labels.
We don't focus only on consequences. Lasting growth happens through teaching, coaching, reflection, and relationship-building.
We don't work in isolation. Supporting students is a team effort — teachers, administrators, families, and scholars all play a role.
At the end of the day, we want every student to feel seen, valued, and challenged to become the best version of themselves. Mistakes don't define them — and there are adults at school who care deeply about their success.
