When a student makes any reference to suicide, threat of suicide, or an attempt at suicide, an immediate referral must be made to administration and/or the counseling department. How to Help

If you think the student may disclose to you an unreported sexual assault, self harm, or potential harm to others, state up front that you are obligated to report any information and refer them to their counselor.

If a student expresses a direct threat to self or others, or acts in a bizarre, highly irrational and disruptive way, escort the student to the administration office or the counseling office immediately.

Refer to Resources and Follow Up

• Question the student about any intention for self harm. Persuade the student, if you can, to find help. Refer student to a counselor or administrator who can provide further assistance.
• Be honest with the student about your limits. This includes limits in time, counseling expertise, and confidentiality.
• Frame any decision to seek and accept help as a good choice.
• If necessary, find someone to stay with the student.
• Make sure the student is accompanied while you make calls to the appropriate resources, and offer to escort the student to those resources. Students may also call 1-800-SUICIDE for evaluation and further possible referral.
