What an amazing way to spend our last day together! We arrived at Wilson Ponds to release our fabulous rainbow trout that we raised together. After a lovely walk in the tallk grass, we visited the Fisheries Research Building where Fish and Game volunteers lead awesome activities: Gyotaku (Fish Painting), Casting Practice, and shared how they Age Trout. We then had some time to enjoy fishing and the beautiful setting. We ended the day at the Fish Hatchery! Whew the day went fast - just like the time we had together in GT. THANK YOU to all the amazing parents that helped on our trip! We appreciate you!
Check out the Final Brain Food Projects.
Check out their Final projects for Session 1 Brain Food Projects. You will see Animations, a movie, robotic summary videos, and photos of 3D prints.Â
For the final projects in GT, 5th grades are using all of the skills they have built over the years to complete projects from a menu. (They helped design the menu options.) There will be 2 sessions of menus- 3 weeks each. Their session projects will be posted after Day 3. For Session 1, they could choose to work on Animation, Movie Making, 3D printing, or Robotics. Take a peek behind the scenes of their projects from days 1 and 2.Â
What if the Big Bad Wolf sued the 3rd pig for medical bills? What if Goldilocks was charged with breaking and entering? Students went through all the steps in a trail in these creative court cases. Take a peek at the courtroom drama!
A huge thank you to a few members of the Speech and Debate team! 5th graders got a peek into the world of Speech and Debate. A demonstration of their Congressional Debate was very inspiring and highly controversial for the fifth graders. Thanks for sharing your hard work!
Fifth graders were hired to represent their clients in these court cases. Collecting fact, calling witnesses, analyzing the law, and digging in to character histories were some of the strategies they used to represent thier clients. A jury listened to the opening statements and arguments to then deliberate and announce a verdict. Take a peek in our storybook courtoom.
Fifth graders wrote and illustrated their own picture books where a main character overcame a fear. A handful of stories were selected to be read to Birch first grade students. Their creativity, dialogue, and ability to show character change was impressive! Take a quick peek at the special guests.
Students played chess against Mr. Arney, our chess instructor - all at the same time! Strategy, planning, and collaboration helped them strengthen their game.Â
Students designed, built, and programmed their own robot animals. Check out their amazing problem solving and dedication to the animals in their habitats.Â
Our amazing assistant superintendent, Joey Palmer, was a guest speaker in our class sharing the message of writing as a process. He didn't just tell the students that "The Art of writing is Rewriting", he showed them! We enjoyed his humor, the book that he wrote and illustrated, and his enthusiasm for writing. What a great kickstart to our book writing project!
5th graders became game creators coding in Scratch. Click the link to play their awesome games!
If there was an app icon that represented you, what would it be? Students explored the idea of symbolism and created their app icon. Using conditional formatting in Sheets, they "programmed" their image into a color by number image. Check out thier amazing work!

Imagine the image that truly represented you. Students used a green screen to create just that - an image that represents who they are.Â
We are off to a great start to the year in 5th grade GT! In the morning, students had a cutting task to stretch their perseverance and problem solving skills. In the afternoon students were given limited time and supplies to create a vehicle that could travel as far as possible with a focus on creativity and learning from mistakes to modify and improve.
