Reading Strategies

USE YOUR READING STRATEGIES TO HELP YOU BECOME AN ACTIVE READER DURING YOUR INDEPENDENT READING TIME!

PREDICT

  • Think about the title, illustrations and what you’ve read so far.
  • Tell what you think will happen next or what you will learn based upon the clues in the story.
  • Read on to gather evidence to support your prediction.

INFER

  • Try to “read between the lines.”
  • Read on to gather evidence to support your inference.

VISUALIZE

  • See the movie in your head. Visualize characters, events and setting to help you understand what’s happening. When you read nonfiction, pay attention to the images that form in your mind as you read.

CONNECT

  • Connect personally with what you are reading (text to self, text to text, text to world). Think of similarities between the descriptions in the selection and what you have personally experienced, heard about and read about.(This strategy depends upon prior knowledge)

QUESTION

  • Question what happens while you read. Searching for reasons behind events and characters’ feelings can help you feel closer to what you are reading.

SUMMARIZE

  • Think about the main ideas or the important parts of the story such as character, setting, plot and theme. Tell in your own words the important things you have read.

EVALUATE

  • Be a JUDGE!
  • Form opinions about what you have read, both while you’re reading and after you’ve finished. For example, do you agree or disagree with a decision a character has made? How good a job has the author done?

MONITOR AND CLARIFY

  • The fuzzy TV screen in your head needs to be adjusted; make sure you reread and read on to check your understanding of the text.
  • Make that “Huh?” and Turn into an “Oh, I get it!” J
