How to Solve a Word Problem
1. Read the problem all the way through for understanding.
2. Read the problem again. This time underline essential information. Identify the goal. (What is the question asking?)
3. Brainstorm Strategies:
Model with manipulatives
Draw a picture or bar model
Talk to your math partner
4. Begin to solve. Show all work and keep your math thinking neat. Work from left to right on your paper so your work is easy to follow.
5. Check the reasonableness of your answer. Ask yourself...Does my answer make sense?
6. Write your answer in an anchor statement.
***Remember, use what you know to help you solve what you don't know.
