Maag Teaching Philosophy
Maag Teaching Philosophy
The goal of effective science instruction is more than simply memorizing and reciting facts. My objective as a biology teacher is to enable students to think critically, apply the scientific process, and understand the relevance of biology in their lives and the world.
A dynamic and engaging learning environment encourages students to ask questions, explore ideas, and challenge assumptions. My teaching methods include lectures, discussions, group work, videos, and real-world examples. These methods cater to different learning styles and ensure accessibility for all students, irrespective of prior knowledge or background. Students are also encouraged to ask questions and find answers independently, assess source reliability, and critique scientific information. These are essential skills in today's information-rich world.
I apply an inquiry/phenomena based approach to learning science whenever possible. Students will have the opportunity to propose questions, develop a hypothesis, and conduct experiments to help them learn and understand the concepts that we are covering. Everyone starts their life as a scientist, my goal is to help students rediscover their curiosity and passion about the natural world.
About me -
My name is Nick Maag and I am excited to be teaching Physical Science and Biology for the first time at Vale High School. I was raised on a farm/feedlot near Willowcreek and graduated from VHS in 2004. I have a degree in Wildlife Resources from the University of Idaho. For many years before I became a teacher I worked on research projects as a field biologist. I trapped and radio collared (or otherwise surveyed) a variety of threatened mammal species in Northwest Montana and Northern Idaho. I am excited to share my passion for Biology with the students.
